Hi Ron!
I have naturally brown coloured hair (quite dark) with a fair bit of grey coming through, I went a few shades lighter recently to a red shade, I don’t know too much about henna colours, but have heard they are wonderful for the hair, what are your thoughts on this and would it make my hair a bit lighter and cover the greys or does henna never lighten hair?
thank you!
Anna
Hi Anna, Henna is something that I experimented with a few years ago and is known as a”substansive” dye. Because it is a dried plant that is activated with water it dries into the hair structure and then leaches – or pulls out – moisture from the hair. The reason it appears to make hair shine is that it “fills” the hair, a bit like polyfilla filling cracks in a wall and the smooth surface reflects light creating shine. Long term, Henna, dries out the hair and causes it to have a coarser texture. The main problem also is the colour choice, you have no control over the result!! and lastly your grey hair may go orange!! The best “almost” organic hair colour on the market is Organics by Herb Uk, and their home colour Tints of Nature I have been using the professional colour for 5 years now and find it to be one of the best around. Hope that answers your question , and thanks for visiting the blog ……. Ron
Thanks Ron! I really appreciate your detailed answer, I am not going to give Henna a go as your right, I dont think I have ever seen anyone who uses it with nice hair!
I do use Tints of Nature, they are fab and I think I will keep on using them!!
What do you think the best hair treatment is for dry hair?
Awesome to be able to ask you questions by the way!!
Anna
Hi Anna….
There a plethora of treatments that do everything short of making you a cup of tea………. Akin make a leave on conditioner that will really help – called Lavender & Anthyllis 24 Hour Intensive Moisture Leave in Conditioner – A good quick home made treatment is as follows …….
Avacado + Mayonnaise + cider vinegar. mix to a creamy paste, apply to your hair and then wrap in foil or a plastic bag and then a towel. Leave on for about 20 to 30 minutes. Rinse well, (and lightly shampoo if needed followed by a little of your normal condition)
Warm Olive oil is also quite effective although its a question of absorption. Manufactured conditioners are created so that they can get through the outer layer of the hair (cuticle).
Two last pointers ……. If the hair feels dry and coarse and “crunchy” (even when you wet it) then the hair needs moisture. If the hair feels over soft or limp then it needs protein. Unless you are a veggie then to add protein just mix a spoon of Bovril (melt it first in a little warm water first) to the mix above – Veggies can use Vegemite. Hope some of this helps……. Thanks for your comments
I’ve just reminded Ron you can also use Live Native,Deep Hair Repair & Pukka Sesame Oil
